On Blogging for 6 Weeks

When I first began blogging, I was unsure what a blog post should look like. Being in my fourth year of college, I am so used to writing scholarly papers, a blog was totally uncharted territories for me. Opinions, not arguments. Links, not scholarly sources. Interaction with the user, not a grade to earn.

When I joined my group, I had no idea we would be blogging about a topic I knew so little about: fashion. I completely expected my portion of the blog to fail because I’m not an expert on the topic. I realized, however, that a blog is a space for discovery. No one reads a blog to read facts and statistics; people read a blog to be engaged and entertained. Quite literally anyone can blog is what I have learned. Because I knew nothing about the topic and because I wasn’t particularly interested in talking about the latest fashion trends of the season, I decided to approach the topic from a place that makes sense to me: fashion in film. I learned that you must blog about something that you are passionate about or you will lose interest and your material will probably not be that interesting to read.

If I were to start another blog, I would now know that a blog takes patience and consistency. If I had not had a weekly deadline, my blog posts would not have been consistent and I probably would have pushed off my posts. I would also want to do the blog with a group again. My favorite thing about the blog was reading the blog posts of my fellow group members and seeing what fashion means to them. This kept the blog fresh and diverse with different opinions and interests. All in all, I have learned more about fashion than I ever had planned to learn and I have successfully entered into the blogging world.
